Rentamt of Leuchtenberg

Previously court clerk's office

Destroyed by a major fire in 1842 – Relocated to Vohenstrauß in 1842

The Rentamt of Leuchtenberg, formerly the court chancery, was also known as the “New Castle.” As a late medieval financial authority, the Rentamt was responsible for administering the manorial revenues. As a result of the great fire of 5 July 1842, the building was completely destroyed, after which the Rentamt was relocated to Vohenstrauß. Today, only a few remnants of masonry at the former site bear witness to this structure of great importance to Leuchtenberg.

This location was once also the seat of the district court of the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg. After the landgraves moved their main residence to Pfreimd Castle in 1332, noble district judges and administrators held office here. The first known district judge was Heinrich von Lichteneck in 1332; the last was Oswald Freiherr von Annethan, who held the office from 1784 to 1804.

In 1836, Theodor Dorfmüller, the former parish priest of Himmelkron, described his impressions of this historically significant place in a reflective moment:
“The noble district judge, staff in hand; to his right the sworn clerk with the book; around them the judgments; honourable men, people of the land from the neighbouring villages. The plaintiff steps forward – is it not a monk from Kastl? What is your request? His abbot’s authority he bears in his hand; the legally appointed spokesman stands at his side. Loud lament rises over the violent noble lords of the Landgraviate who have torn away his monastery’s property. The judge asks about the ring, what right it signifies. Right is granted, it is proclaimed to the accused. The court is stern, yet of the noble lords none appears to answer. Again a brief question, swift justice; the monk departs victorious with his court letter.”

This account, written in an archaic style, is based on a documented historical event before the district court of Leuchtenberg in the year 1334.
