Former residential wing

Above the Dürnitz, in the western wall of one storey, the enclosing walls with oval ox-eye windows from the 17th or 18th century have been preserved. The so-called “upper storey” originally served as a residential wing and was used as a granary until the fire of 1842. During this fire, the entire roof structure was destroyed, causing the rooms to fall into ruins. Originally, a spiral staircase led to the upper storey; this staircase no longer exists today. Only the rounded masonry on both sides next to the steps that were later installed still indicates the former staircase. This building of the main castle was inhabited for the longest period and, from the 17th century, briefly served as accommodation for the court clerk of Leuchtenberg. During this time, old documents, books, and letters from the dissolved offices were also stored here.

Thanks to its fortified floor, the room now serves as a passage to the bergfried and at the same time as a popular viewing point. From this plateau, another panoramic view opens up over the Upper Palatinate Forest and the Steinwald as far as the Fichtel Mountains: from the Schneeberg and Ochsenkopf via Parkstein and the Rauher Kulm to Monte Kaolino near Hirschau.
